JULY-2003        4000'+/-        8691'        5hrs+/-    Moderate-Solo
Park on shoulder of 93 after Paint Pots.  I recommend going straight up the loose shale from the
avalanche shoot.  Plenty of hands on scrambling so just don't cause a rock slide with you in it.
Pay attention.  Going around to the ridge adds to the route and takes a tad away from the art of
scrambling.  Ridgeline is narrow.  You can reach out and touch the backside of Stanley.  You
have great views of Ball's glacier and peak.  Assiniboine was hazy this day (large fire
somewhere).  You have good views of Rockwall and Goodsirs and cool glacier up on Verendyre.

On decent, I came within 50 yards of large black bear sow and single (born in June) small cub.  I
could have touched her before she saw, smelled or heard me, so I traversed over into trees and
brush to set up for better pictures and she heard the rustling and ran the cub up a tree.
Afterwards hiked in on Numa Creek for view of Numa Mountain and suprised a Marten on the
bridge about 5K in.  We had a Pepe Lepu moment.  Great day!
Crux is last 800', I preferred going
straight up loose shale.  If you
choose this vs ridge, be careful!!!
