Park at the King Creek trail head 50+ km south of
Trans-Canada on Hwy 40. Due to floods, this trail appears to
no longer be maintained regularly. The walk through Kings
Canyon is magnificent and you will see where quite a few sport
routes have been placed on it's challenging walls. Hike along
the trail and creek through the canyon until it comes out at a
fork in the creek. Follow the left fork. Some large cairns
should be visible after a few meters on the right bank that lead
off onto an animal trail that follows the creek north all the way
towards the headwall. Ascend the left side of the headwall and
continue up to the base of Hood at 8000'+. Some more cairns
appear, and making for the col between Hood and Brock
(directly south) is the crux of this scramble. Start left and angle
right, zig zagging across the loose rumble and short challenges
following different gullies to the col at 9000'+, then left to the
summit on the south ridge.
Although I had the best weather day of the year on this
scramble, I had a miserable ascent. I chose to head directly
for the base of Blane by following a well traveled trail up the
slope that ascends eastward as soon as I reached the fork in
the creek. This led me up a dry creek bed which took me to
7500', but the northern traverse over to Hood was incredibly
difficult as I had to descend and ascend many drainages and
the steep angled grassy slopes were bad on the feet and knees.
Horrible idea. I finally had to descend completely back to the
creek and follow it to the headwall. Brock looks like a fun
climb itself. The views opened up to Joffre, Sir Douglas and
other notables.
